Babylon 5 Newton Soundsfor Newton 2.0©Ê1996 by Ray Rischpater. All Rights Reserved.version 2.0, 960702What is it?B5Sounds is an extension for your 2.0 Newton which adds some of my favorite sound clips from the award-winning show Babylon 5. Now you, too, can have a Newton which chirps, beeps, and sounds just like your favorite character (well, two of them, anyway) on Babylon 5!This package has been tested and works on the Apple Newton MessagePad 120 and 130, along with the Harris CDA 2.0. This package will not run on Newtons running the 1.0 version of the Newton Operating System. (Sorry, folks.)What sounds are in there?Well, not as many as I'd like; mostly because they're pretty honkin' huge. But, for your Newton's enjoyment, you've been provided with:¥ Ivanova's "Commander, you'd better take a look at this."¥ Ivanova's "If you'll excuse me, if you need me, I'll be over there - getting drunk with the rest of the aliens."¥ The Babylon 5 computer's chirp¥ The Babylon 5 computer saying "Confirmed"¥ The Babylon 5 door chime.¥ The Babylon 5 computer saying "Now entering local space."¥ The Babylon 5 computer saying "Stand by."¥ The Babylon 5 computer saying "Unable to respond."In addition, I've thrown a couple of the non-Babylon 5 sounds sitting on my Mac which have come in handy during the occasional meeting.Cool! How do I use it?Install the packages containing the sounds you'd like to add using your favorite package installer on either the internal store or a RAM card. (Unlike 1.0, each sound is now a seperate package. This means it's a pain to install and remove if you want all the sounds, but I got lots of email from folks who only wanted one or two of the sounds...)In the Extras drawer, find your Prefs application (usually under the Setup folder), and select either the Sound or Alarm item, depending on which sound you'd like to change. Touch the diamond next to either Alert Sound or Alarm Sound, and select a sound.Wait a minute! What's Babylon 5?Oh, boy. Where have you been the last three years? Babylon 5 is an amazingly good science fiction television novel written by J. Michael Straczynski and produced by Babylonian Inc. for Warner-Brothers Domestic Television, and well worth watching if you like either drama or science fiction. Be forewarned - it's not nearly as fluffy as Star Trek, and takes a little focus to get into, especially if you start in the middle. This is cool! What do I owe you?Technically, nothing. As these are sound bites from a previously copywritten work, I'd probably make a lot of legal people really upset if I tried to get anything out of borrowing them - and anyway, the actors, sound folks, producers, and everybody else worked a lot harder than I did on these sounds! But I'd like to ask two things, if you've the time:1) If you're currently a B5 fan, take a minute and send email to your local TV station and Warner-Brothers in support of the show. It really will make a difference, and guarantee that JMS can finish out his planned storyline if we all take a minute and voice our support.2) If you've any suggestions, feel free to drop me email at dove@lothlorien.com. I may not respond right away, but rest assured I'll read your feedback and take it under advisement.Legal Stuff...You may freely reproduce and redistribute this work, provided that this readme remains with the work, and provided that you do not charge for redistribution, save connection charges billed by on-line services such as AOL and Compuserve. This makes exchanging the file bulky with other folks, but allows users to pick the sounds they want. Thanks to Scott Leapman for being the first with the idea and testing.1 - Initial release... yay! Thanks for Gail, who needed the code sample anyway, who goaded me into finishing it, and Rachel, who reminded me that other fans might enjoy this, and who tolerated yet another late night in front of the keyboard.
