How you can make a backup of your data, if the display of the Newton device is broken? You can't use any program that requires user interaction, because you can't see the display, perhaps the pen input is defective also.
Sometimes after installing a program your Newton device wouldn't operate proper no more and you can't even open the extras drawer to remove this program.
Simply load the SBM Utilities package and the Emergency package on a storage card with enough capacity to backup the entire internal store. Of course you should do that BEFORE you are in trouble or you must ask a friend with a Newton device to load the packages on the card at the moment you running in trouble.
Then insert this card in your Newton device. The backup will start after aprox. 20 seconds automatically. You will hear "Backup completed" when all the data are backuped. Now you can remove the storage card and restore the data to a new or repaired Newton device.
Please note:
- You must load the Emergency package on a storage card. If you try to load it on the internal store, you will see an appropriate message.
- You must have loaded the SBM Utilities on the same storage card or on the internal store.
Everytime you insert the storage card that contains the Emergency package or if you reboot your Newton device with this card inserted or if you file the Emergency package on a storage card, you will see a floater like this:
- You can abort the operation by tapping "Stop", but if your Newton device is protected with a password, you can't see the floater until you have entered the password! So don't leave the card inserted!
- If there is already a backup on the card, a new backup will be added. This means repeatedly insertion fills up the card quickly!
- In the case your Newton device will not operate proper no more because of a data problem you can tap on "Start Utilities" to run the SBM Utilities and try to get you Newton to shape up.
The result of the backup is the same as made a normal backup with the SBM Utilities, so you can restore the data with the SBM Utilities.
You can change the delay between card insert or reboot your Newton device and the automatic start of the emergency backup. To do this, simply tap the icon of the Emergency package. By default you can find it in the extras folder 'Extensions'.
